Paige Louthan, the Conservation Chair for the Southampton Garden Club, sent this email as a reminder for how to protect our land and ourselves this season.

Dear SGC Members,

Summer is upon us and here are a few thoughts as we continue to work on protecting ourselves, our land and water. It is up to all of us to try to conserve water, and reduce the use of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.

We can improve our lawns and our health by following the guidelines described here by the Perfect Earth Project:

Also, if you are wondering where all the butterflies, fireflies, etc have gone, it is in large part because of the incessant spraying of properties in our area. Companies are making a lot of money selling “anti-bug” products.  All pesticide sprays–even “natural” and “organic”–hit and drift onto nearby plants and creatures, including pets and people. Spraying also contaminates our local waterways, drinking water, and soils.
