East End Hospice

Southampton Garden Club members creating orchid baskets for East End Hospice patients.

In 2010, inspired by compassion and creativity, Lydia Wallis sparked a tradition that continues to grow deeper roots each year. Her vision-making festive baskets of evergreens adorned with beautiful bows for East End Hospice planted the seed for a cherished Southampton Garden Club initiative. Every December, club members gather in the basement of St. John’s Church to create over 65 holiday baskets. The greens are lovingly clipped from members’ own gardens, a symbol of the personal connection each of us brings to the project.

In July, we assemble delicate orchid baskets, adding a touch of summer elegance. But it was Lydia’s personal story-the loss of her father at a young age–that inspired a meaningful extension: creating special baskets for the children of hospice patients. This thoughtful gesture embodies the spirit of empathy and service that defines our club.

Through this work, we don’t just share greenery-we grow lasting bonds. The act of coming together, hands busy with ribbon and pine, fosters a deep camaraderie among members. And as we give to those facing difficult times, we forge a living connection to our broader community. In every basket, there is kindness, beauty, and the enduring power of growing connections.
